Mark Zuckerberg's Metaverse Criticized For Being Too Bad

Horizon Worlds virtual universe was complained by users because the graphics quality lost to the game since 1989.

"Today, we officially launched Horizon Worlds in France and Spain. We look forward to everyone coming to explore and build immersive worlds. We will soon bring the metaverse to other countries," CEO Meta Mark said. Zuckerberg wrote on his personal Facebook last week.

In the photo, CEO Meta's avatar stands in a barren landscape with miniature versions of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona in the background.

Contrary to Zuckerberg's expectations, users did not seem to care much about Horizon Worlds but expressed disappointment. The post attracted 121 thousand likes and 20 thousand comments, but most say the metaverse that Meta is pouring money into is too bad.

Many people even think that Zuckerberg's virtual universe is inferior to The Sims game released in 1989. "Let's focus on Facebook's problems and fix it instead of running after useless things like this. Most users is having trouble everyday on the platform," commented Rumara account from India with more than 1.2 million followers.

The Facebook founder's photo has become the inspiration for a series of metaverse memes across platforms. Many say it loses even to the PC games of the 1997s. Others say the graphics of Horizon Worlds are so bad that it shouldn't be called a metaverse.

A few days after the community's criticism, Zuckerberg had to clarify: "Major updates to Horizon Worlds and avatar graphics are coming soon. The picture I posted earlier was just a hastily taken version to marks the launch of Horizon in France and Spain. The graphics in Horizon will be much better, even if you use VR glasses. Horizon is working hard to improve the issues with user feedback."

However, the technology site The Verge believes that if Meta has spent tens of billions of dollars on the digital world, Mark Zuckerberg should not post "hurried snapshots" on social networks. Poor graphics will negatively affect user psychology when Meta has just announced the price increase of Meta Quest 2 from 299 USD to 399 USD.

Horizon Worlds is a metaverse project developed by Reality Labs of Meta and launched in December 2021. This is one of the central products, catering to the company's virtual universe ambitions. Similar to Roblox or Minecraft platforms, Horizon Worlds allows you to build a custom virtual environment, then experience it as a legless avatar. As of February, the platform's monthly users increased to 300,000. In April, Mark Zuckerberg said the platform would be testing the monetization feature.

In Horizon Worlds, players can chat, create, and explore the world together. However, the platform was also reported by some people to have been sexually harassed, groped or sexually assaulted. At the end of July, Meta started giving the green light for 18+ content, causing the community to fiercely argue.

In his report for the second quarter of 2022, Zuckerberg said that Reality Labs alone lost nearly $ 3 billion. Plus, after 18 months, Mea's virtual space project lost tens of billions of dollars. However, Zuckerberg continues to place high expectations on the metaverse.

Meanwhile, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, thinks that Meta may not be on the right track in its ambition to dominate the metaverse. "It's too early to know what people really want. So whatever Facebook is creating so far may not be right. Despite pouring billions of dollars into the virtual universe, they may not ultimately be right. never found the market," Buterin wrote on Twitter earlier this month.
